Yep, you heard it right, there are tax scammers out there requesting that people pay their non-existent “tax bills” by iTunes vouchers. The scammers call the taxpayer, advise them that they have a tax debt and then force the taxpayer to buy iTunes vouchers and pass the voucher number on to the scammer. As unbelievable as this sounds, there are people out there that are getting taken in by this scam. Unfortunately there have been 26 reports of this kind of scam, leading to over $176k in iTunes “tax payments”.

Once again, just another elaborate scam out there – PLEASE DON’T BE FOOLED.

The ATO have advised that “We will never request the payment of a tax debt via gift or pre-paid cards such as iTunes and Visa cards. Nor will we ask for direct credit to be paid to a personal bank account. And if the person calling you is rude and aggressive, threatening police or legal action if you don’t do something immediately – it’s not the ATO”.

Tell your friends, family, colleagues and anyone else you know – the more people armed with this information, the better.
